Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill, Tarzana

Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill

5511 Reseda Blvd.

Tarzana, Ca 91356

For some time my good friend Cameron Hashemi, Franchisee of 4 store locations, would tell me to come to his family-operated Sharky’s franchised locations, and I finally did. I was asked to come in to show people a side of Sharky’s they might not have expected, like how it’s actually healthy and great for gym buffs looking for a quick protein-heavy low-carb meal.  My only regret is, WHY DIDN’T I COME IN SOONER!? This place is amazing! It is fast like Chipotle, but wayyyy better. Sharky’s is a fast-casual chain where you place your order at the cashier line, then grab a variety of complimentary salsa while waiting for your food to be delivered to your table. Although it is a chain, they are unlike what chain restaurants represent. First off, they use ORGANIC, LOCAL, and ALL-NATURAL ingredients. I must summarize the benefits, because this is important:

– All Natural Chicken Breast. No added preservatives, hormones, or phosphates.

– All Natural Angus Steak. Antibiotic free with no added hormones.

– WILD Caught Fish (holy moly!). Wild Caught MSC Certified Alaskan Salmon and more depending on store location.

– GMO-free Corn.

– Organic Tofu. Non-GMO Project Verified & U.S. grown.

– Organic Ingredients: Black Beans, Pinto Beans, Quinoa, Whole Grain Brown Rice, Long Grain White Rice, Salad Greens, & Yams.

– rBHG-free (Growth hormone free) Cheese & Sour Cream.

– Salsas and Guacamole Handcrafted Daily.

– Vegetarian, Vegan, and Gluten Free options.

It is clear that they truly are dedicated to providing the BEST ingredients every chance they get, which is awesome for a restaurant with 24 branches! Now, on to what I ate…

I ordered something off their Naked Menu: Lower Fat & Lower Calories items just to see if I would like it (because after all, I’m not really that girl).  I went with the Wild Salmon “Lite” Burrito. Now, here’s what is in it: Grilled WILD salmon, nori seaweed, organic poblano brown rice, avocado, cucumber, cabbage, chili sesame aioli, wrapped in a low-fat whole wheat tortilla. It is loaded with 41 grams of protein!  First off, I was very impressed that they use WILD caught fish. Even that can be a challenge to find to buy for home use, let alone finding it on a restaurant menu. Secondly, I went with this burrito because besides the restaurant that my own family owned, I have yet to see very many salmon wraps/burritos. Third, the ingredients were different and I wanted to try something new.  All in all, it was a great combination. Especially topped with Fire Roasted salsa (dark colored)….mmmm mmmm!

Next, I tried their tacos…Original Chicken, Original Steak, and their Tempura Battered Cod Fish. The original style tacos have onion, cilantro, and salsa verde. All seafood tacos have cabbage, pico de gallo, sauce, and cheese. As listed above, each restaurant has their own supply of fish which varies store to store, so not all fish selections are available. The fish tacos were bomb!!!!!!!

Next, I went with the Sharky’s Quinoa salad, a vegan dish.  It had organic red and white quinoa, organic baby spinach, cabbage, jicama, cucumber, sweet peppers, green onions, cilantro, avocado vinaigrette topped with avocado slices and a sprinkle of toasted flax and chia seeds. Besides the fact that the salad was tasty, and the ingredients are top-notch, the portion was pretty big. A salad like this is big enough if that’s all you want to eat for lunch (although, I could never), but PERFECT to split it four ways as a side dish.

To drink, we tried two of their daily handcrafted lemonades and teas. These drinks also vary in other Sharky’s. The Tarzana location I visited currently has these flavored lemonades: Strawberry Cilantro, Watermelon Basil, and Strawberry Lime. The ones we tried were the Hibiscus Ginger Green Tea, and their Watermelon Lemonade. Both were delicious!! You can’t go wrong with either one.

Last but not least, my favorite thing I ate was the Spicy 4 Cheese STONE FIRED PIZZA! Tomatillo cheese sauce, tomatoes, cilantro, red onion, sour cream, chicken (add-on), served on a jalapeno-cilantro tortilla crust. This was awesome! The only other Mexican pizza I’ve ever had is from Taco Bell, and no offence to Taco Bell, but you can’t even compare the two.  Not only does this pizza have better quality ingredients, but it was just done REALLY well.  This is hands down my MUST ORDER if you are not about counting calories.  Again, something you could easily split.

Stone Fired Pizza

Stone Fired Pizza

My advice is to order a Power Plate which is basically their meats/fish/poultry with sides, the 4 cheese pizza, a salad, and share with your friends. If you are a body builder and in a bind, you can stop in, get your meat and side of brown rice and/or yams.  If you’ve never been to Sharky’s before, than I’d say, for once, just skip Chipotle and Baja Fresh, and try it!! Their menu is very eclectic so you have tons of options to choose from. Their menu will satisfy the health-conscious or those just seeking a craving for flavorful Mexican food.

Most importantly I’d like to thank my good friend Cameron and proud franchisee of 4 locations. His passion for what he does has been an exciting thing to watch and finally experience first hand with the amazing customer service. Even though he’s the head honcho, he was out there wiping down tables, greeting guests, and making sure they had a five star experience. Thank you for giving me a true Sharky’s experience!

If you are ever on Main Street, few blocks away from Venice Beach, there is no way you can miss Ashland Hill. A bustling beer and wine garten slash gastropub, adorned with tea lights, its the perfect brunch and/or date night venue.  I went here a few weekends ago with the fiance, and we left with happy little tummies. The menu was very eclectic and unexpected. I was expecting more of an American food type menu, but was surprised to see items like shawarma and curry rice bowl. So, lets dive right in.

First, we tried a flight of 4 locally brewed beers, one of which was the Belching Beaver, a peanut butter milk stout.  I love to try the craziest or most unique item on the menu, and this seemed to fit the bill. Its just fun to get a beer and try to use your senses to get the hint of the flavor they are trying to achieve.

MMMMM…….

MMMMM…….

The first appetizer up was the avocado and roasted tomato toast. A plate of 4 little pieces of toast, topped with a creamy avocado sauce, goat cheese, lime, Thai chili, pickled pearl onion, and smoked salt. Cute and probably the fanciest toast I’ve ever had.

Next, we tried the crispy cauliflower – salmoriglio, parmesan, saffron aioli, pickled vegetables espelette. Damn, I had to Wikipedia what salmoriglio and espelette mean.  Apparently one form of salmariglio can come as a butter, slightly soft and whipped, containing Dijon mustard, lemon, olive oil, and fresh herbs. Espelette is a crushed red pepper. I LOVE when I can’t recognize ingredients on a menu.  The saffron aioli really made the dish come together. Because of the decent size and little pieces of cauliflower, I think this is a good appetizer to order if you are looking to share.

The third appetizer we tried was the Leo’s Loco Moco, a Hawaiian dish that comes in many variations. This one in particular was the gastro-pubby version of a Loco Moco in that the rice was flavored in a way that had me taking bite after bite, trying to dissect each and every single flavor with my tongue.  I realized I could just look at the menu to figure out that Leo’s Loco Moco is made with lemongrass pork sausage, kimchi rice, sunny-side up egg, and kecap manis (sweet soy sauce). But where’s the fun in that?

I had to save the best appetizer for last. Of course, that would be my favorite food, mac & cheese. But this one in particular is the charred shishito mac & cheese – charred shishito peppers, pickled cherry peppers, white cheddar, and an herb crust. I mean, just look at this beauty, another must-order on their menu.

Our first entree was the coconut curry rice bowl – chickpeas, brussel sprouts, pickled vegetables, kimchi, sesame, nori and basil.  I chose this because I wanted to see how they would bring their creativity to curry.  I’m glad I did because this was not your typical curry bowl.  Again, there were many unfamiliar flavors that had me savoring every bite. Got a health conscientious person in the group? This would be perfect for them.

For the second entree, I went with their most popular dish, the Ashland Hill burger – red onion bacon jam, sharp white cheddar, paprika, aioli, watercress with a side of herb parmesan fries. It was everything they promised and more. The pattie was so juicy, tender, and you could really taste the paprika. It tasted more like smoked paprika to me.  The red onion bacon jam is what makes this burger unduplicatable, and the watercress was a nice variation from typical lettuce. You can tell a lot of effort went into the making of this burger to come up with the perfect complements. I definitely recommend this for any first-timers at Ashland Hill, but after one bite, I’m afraid you will only want to order this on future visits. This burger alone is enough of a reason to make your way over there. Its that good.

Can you tell I’m enjoying myself?

Can you tell I’m enjoying myself?

For dessert, I went with the market blueberry crumble – oat crumble, whipped white chocolate, and ginger ice cream. I was soooo happy with this because the blueberries were real, whole berries baked underneath a crispy oat crumble, topped with a nice scoop of ice cream.  If you are having difficulty deciding and only want to get one dessert, trust me I know food, and this is the one you want to go with.

Ashland Hill is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a more upscale restaurant than the regular casual places surrounding the venice boardwalk. This place will offer you a foodie experience, with great ambiance, and unique menu options. There is plenty to do and see in the surrounding area, and I would recommend visiting the shops nearby, and ending the day at Ashland Hill for a nice dinner for two and a cold beer to go with it.

www.theharvestbar.com

This past beautiful Sunday, I spent a good amount of time at The Harvest Bar, a little establishment tucked away in the heart of Sherman Oaks.  I enjoyed sitting outside with our amazing Cali weather, eating awesome Acai bowls. How could something so good be so healthy!? But it truly is.

The Harvest Bar focuses on fast-casual superfood recipes. This place is my go-to when I’m on the go and I’ve got a sweet tooth. I’ll stop here on my way to the nail salon because it gives me the satisfaction of eating ice cream or gelato, but without the guilt. Not only do I not feel guilty, but I actually feel good eating it because I know that each of the ingredients have essential nutrients.

The Harvest Bar in Sherman Oaks

The Harvest Bar in Sherman Oaks

The concept came about when founder Aric Haut, a former sports software developer was traveling in Brazil, and noticed Acai stands on every corner serving a similar snack. His vision was to bring this idea to life in a way that is quick, healthy, and delicious.  Well, he nailed it.

These acai bowls are awesome creations with high-quality ingredients that complement each other so well. These super-foods are literally some of the healthiest and most nutritious foods on our planet, like cacao, goji berries, and bee pollen.

List of Superfoods

List of Superfoods

First up, we tried the Super Greens and PB & Banana Acai bowl.  I wanted to try the Super Greens because I was curious to see how they could make a blend of organic acai, kale, spinach, spirulina, banana, dates, chia seeds, and apple juice taste good.  “Was it tasty?” you ask. Yes, Yes and Yes!! The acai blend was a dark, rich, green hue blended to smooth perfection. Aside from the color, you would never guess that you are eating vegetables.  Topped with pumpkin seeds, strawberries, banana, pineapple, bee pollen, and goji berries.

The second acai bowl is one of their most popular, called the PB & banana. This one is made from organic acai, peanut butter, banana, hemp protein, dates, and hemp milk, topped with granola, banana, seasonal berries, and cacao nibs. This and the other extremely popular bowl, Super Protein, have the same base, but it’s the toppings that make them different. I can see why they’re so popular, jam packed with protein but delivered to you in a delicious form. Even though the bowls are pretty big, I felt so light after eating it.

PB and Banana

Next up was the Butter Coffee…that’s right, you heard me. Coffee mixed with clarified butter and coconut oil.  You might think that combo to be strange, I would have too 6 months ago, but a while back my mother kept harping about this thing called the Ketogenic diet. On this diet, you are allowed to, if not recommended to have butter in your coffee. Nevertheless, I was so curious to try this, even though I’m not on that particular diet. Oddly enough, it was actually quite tasty. Not sure if I would recommend this unless you are on that diet, but if you are impartial to the extra calories and want it for the creamy coconutty flavor, than go for it.  Still, I have to point out that this is the first place I’ve come across to actually accommodate this new diet trend.

Butter Coffee

Last but not least, and probably the thing that Haut is most excited for are the savory hot bowls that are rolling out.  The bowls consist of cooked quinoa, topped with various vegetables.  These hot bowls (along with most of their menu items) are totally vegan!  The ingredients are so fresh. It’s truly the perfect meal after a great workout. What I’m most excited for the curry bowl they are coming out with soon.  So there’s your scoop on The Harvest Bar. And just for my audience, if you mention “Foodecall” at the cash register, you can buy one bowl (hot or cold bowl) and get one free! But hurry this deal will only last for two weeks from the date of this post. Don’t forget to leave a comment and tell me what you think about it

I’m so happy to have gained another local spot here in Sherman Oaks, On The Thirty.  Even though it opened in March of 2013, it still feels like it was just yesterday.  It’s quite an awesome bar with nice ambiance, dimly lit, and bustling during peak hours.  The food is mainly American, and includes pizza’s, sandwiches, oysters, and unique appetizers. Their happy hour consists of select pizzas, $2 off all draft beers, $5 wine and small plates, and $6 cocktails. I’ve had the oysters, love them and love the presentation. On this particular visit, I ordered the pulled pork and plantain sandwich with the truffle fries. A very unique combo which I ordered because my cousin said it was probably the best pulled pork sandwich he’s ever had.

I’m assuming their name is derived from the fact that there are 30 boutique California native wines, and 30 California brewed craft beer, and an award winning mixology menu.  They also take care in making sure the produce is organic and locally grown, and that their meat is also hormone-free and grass fed. Business must be booming because they’re opening their second location in Oak Park on February 20th, 2016!

I found my new go-to Chinese restaurant, only wish it was a little closer to me. But here’s why I would return to Szechwan Palace. Firstly, they had a wide variety of food on their menu, from appetizers, soups, chicken, beef, seafood, etc. Secondly, everything we had was delicious and actually better than expected. One of my childhood memories is going to have Chinese food with my dad, and we ALWAYS ordered Chicken Chop Suey, and by always, I mean we NEVER strayed from it.  Since I moved to California, I’ve been on the search for a really good Chicken Chop Suey, but they are rather hard to find.  The chicken chop suey here definitely lived up to my expectations, especially because I asked them to use brown sauce instead of what they normally use and this truly hit the spot. The third reason I would go back here is because, even with our alcoholic beverages, the whole meal came out to be really affordable! Another great aspect of this place is that its within walking distance to a couple of cool bars…but I recommend loading up on the $3 drinks at Szechwan Palace before heading out. Don’t worry, I got chuuu!

Rosie’s BBQ, Northridge

Rosie’s BBQ

8930 Corbin Avenue

Northridge, CA

www.rosiesbbq.com

“Let everyone who enters as guests, leave as friends,” a quote that is not only written on the walls of Rosie’s BBQ, but something that they live by through and through. I have first hand experience with this as I truly felt like I left having met some awesome people who take so much pride in what they do. A true family owned and run business, if there ever was one. Where siblings manage the kitchen, dad and son greet the guests, and mom is in the back baking desserts on a daily basis.I was so impressed at how involved the entire family is in making Rosie’s BBQ what it is.

When I first arrived, I noticed the old fashioned country feel, with the horseshoe bench and hunting memorabilia on the wall.  Owners Richard and Richard Jr. gave us a run-down of their history and their vision for Rosie’s BBQ when they took over two years ago. Their idea is to serve BBQ from different regions based on who does it best in their opinion. For example, their pulled pork is done in a North Carolina fashion, while their tri-tip is done in a Texan style.

To start off, we were served freshly baked garlic rolls. And to drink, we ordered two of their specialty drinks, Hawaiian Breeze and Tradewind. I recommend the Hawaiian Breeze because of the splash of strawberry puree they throw in there. Makes all the difference in the world.

In order to try as much variety as possible, we ordered 2 combo plates, where each comes with two sides. The first Combo plate was baby back ribs, tri-tip, cole slaw and baked beans. Their baby back ribs and tri-tip are both slow cooked for 12 hours and then finished off on a mesquite wood grill to give it that nice smokey flavor.  The ribs…delicious, and the tri-tip, probably the best tri-tip I’ve ever had. The meat was so tender and easy to devour, especially with that amazing smokey flavor.  Ribs were smothered in their very own home-made BBQ sauce! Second combo plate was baby back ribs, beef ribs, cheesy garlic mashed potatoes, and cheesy mac and cheese (drool). Beef ribs, just as yummy as the baby back ribs, were juicy, tender, and meaty.  The mashed potatoes and especially the mac and cheese are divine! Even though they are both carbs, I would still order them again and again.

Dessert was a tough choice to make but we opted for the peach cobbler. I loved the texture of the dough, and loved how the dessert itself was not so sweet, because you got all the sweetness you need from the vanilla ice cream on top.  The combo of warm peach cobbler with cool creamy vanilla ice cream, you can’t go wrong with that.

All in all, I had an amazing experience not only with the food but more importantly the hospitality we received. I know that I’m planning on going back to try their other menu items like their lamb shank.  If you’re ever in the mood for some BBQ, do yourself a favor and check out Rosie’s BBQ. Order their Tri-tip, which is beyond amazing, alongside their mac and cheese and you’ll be happy you did.

Major Dave’s Chicken, Pasadena

Major Dave’s Chicken

Pasadena, CA 91106

Ever wish you could eat fried chicken and not feel the guilt? You’re probably thinking, “duhh, but we all know there’s no such thing”…or is there? I think I’ve found just the thing..ok maybe it’s not “go out of your way and do this on the daily” healthy, but its probably the closest you’re gonna get to guilt-less fried chicken.  I’m talking about a place where there are no GMOs, no hormones, no additives, no antibiotics, and no preservatives in the food. Just free range Mary’s Chicken, the same chicken sold at Whole Foods. Where everything is prepared with REAL and FRESH ingredients, and the chicken is made to order.

I’m talking about Major’s Dave’s Chicken, the newest and tastiest thing to happen to Pasadena.

I was honored to have the opportunity to interview the owner Dave Caldwell and his lovely wife Jill. I was initially greeted by Jill, who started us off with all of their side dishes to try.

…Alright, now what’s the first thing that comes to your mind as a side dish to fried chicken? Waffles, sure, but we’ll get to that…for me, I think of either french fries, mashed potatoes, or anything equally unhealthy.  Well, you won’t find that here, and if you do, it will probably come in the healthiest version possible. At Major Dave’s Chicken, their sides are literally things you could eat on a daily basis such as:

Creamy Cole Slaw

Kale Caesar Salad – Rich green kale with their homemade Caesar dressing. Definitely one of my favorite salads there because man, its so crisp & fresh, and they use the expensive kale too!

Kale Caesar Salad

Roasted Corn Salad with Tomatoes & Feta – you can’t go wrong with this one. The corn gives it a sweetness and the feta gives it that salty taste, mixed with the sliced cherry tomatoes, makes it a perfect combo.

Roasted Corn Salad With Tomatoes & Feta

Roasted Corn Salad With Tomatoes & Feta

Black Bean & Corn Salad – all fresh ingredients. The fact that they use cherry tomatoes in just about everything blows my mind away.

Black Bean & Corn Salad

All the sides pair perfectly well with the fried chicken, and help balance it out, but my two favorite sides were the Whipped Garlic Cauliflower and the Honest Mac & Cheese.

Honest Mac & Cheese

Honest Mac & Cheese

I love mac & cheese no matter what form, so that was kind of a no brainer.  It is seriously one of my top five favorite foods.  Usually if its on a menu, I’m gonna order it.  But theirs is made with REAL cheese, three to be exact.  Truly homemade and delicious!

Now, the whipped garlic cauliflower was something I was really looking forward to trying. At first bite, my fiance thought it was mashed potatoes and didn’t even know he was eating cauliflower! That’s when you know you’ve got something good.

Whipped Garlic Cauliflower

Ok, you’re like, “stop teasing me already.” So on to the good stuff…of course, the fried chicken.  If only I could put into words how good the chicken was.  First off, until now I have yet to come across actually “spicy” chicken. The ones I’ve had thus far were simply slightly peppered. But at Major Dave’s I was introduced to this new and trendy Nashville Spicy Chicken. We were totally blown away at how it was perfectly seasoned, and actually had a good kick to it. Crispy on the outside, but not too thick a layer of batter.  This was truly done well.

Spicy Chicken with Corn Bread Muffin

Spicy Chicken with Corn Bread Muffin

Best of all, their batter is homemade, not some mass produced, preservative laden batter.  Major Dave even did his research on the best oil to use when frying, so he opted to fry in a beef tallow. According to his research, this is not only a better oil to use, health wise, but it also helps the chicken stay crunchy even after refrigeration.

Can’t handle spicy? Not to worry, they’ve got non-spicy chicken for you too!

Fried Chicken with Corn Muffin

Remember I said I’d get to waffles, well, I’ll let you in on a little secret…they are currently working on adding waffles and sandwiches to the menu! And guess what, here’s a sneak peak!

Chicken Sandwich

Chicken Sandwich

How amazing does this look? Their chicken sandwich was topped with pickles, creamy cole slaw, and CHERRY tomatoes, drizzled with the most amazing homemade buttermilk chive sauce. Not to mention, their bbq and honey mustard sauces are homemade as well. Incredible!! You can just tell that they’ve taken their time to think about everything and deliver the best quality ingredients at every turn.

All this, “made by a real major, not a fake colonel,” in Major Dave’s own words. I already see myself substituting my usual fried chicken go-tos for Major Dave’s Chicken.  Its literally the “Chipotle of fried chicken.”  No matter where you are in LA, this place is definitely worth the trip.

Guess what! Dave is giving you the chance to come in and try his chicken sandwich. Buy one chicken sandwich, and get a second one free! I went up to Pleasanton California for a wedding at the Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery. It was such a beautiful wedding at a beautiful venue.  Since we stayed at the Courtyard Marriot in Livermore, the next morning before heading out, we stopped at Denica’s Real Food Kitchen.  It was a great choice because the food was fresh, locally grown, organic, and portions were quite large.  They have a chips and salsa bar for the taking. The service is great, as all the servers will ask you how you’re doing when they walk by the tables. And the best part about Denica’s is that if you tell them it’s your first visit, you get one of their homemade cookies free!
