One thing I love about LA is how easy it is find motivated people who are not merely driven in pursuit of their passions, but also holding proudly and compassionately to a sense of community.  I witnessed it first hand during my meeting with Jonel De Los Reyes, General Manager of Lo/Cal Coffee and Market in Santa Monica.  His business philosophy is something he shares earnestly, and there’s a simple message at the heart of it… there’s a new wave of entrepreneurship… one that is no longer singularly money driven, but that is first socially responsible — a concept that is reflected in almost every aspect of Lo/Cal’s operations. They source all of their products locally, and decisions are made collectively among the entire staff.

And that’s just behind the scenes…

ON to the coffee…..

I sampled the macchiato, cortado, cappuccino, honey latte, and last but not least, their cold brew Nitro coffee.  The cold brew is prepared by steeping locally roasted coffee in room temperature purified water for 12 hours, after which it is injected with nitrogen, resulting in an outstanding “smoother and creamier” texture. This was described by the staff as being comparable to drinking a Guinness, and it turned out to be very true! It was so rich and bold. The silky mouth feel and long lingering taste let you know that what you’re sipping is of exceptional quality. This and the honey latte were my two favorite drinks.

But let’s talk about the reason I was here to begin with. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to try, quite literally, the BEST biscuits ever!  Nick Westbrook, owner of Honey Butter Biscuits, graciously invited me to an exclusive tasting of his authentic Southern biscuits, which are featured at Lo/Cal. We started off with one of his Georgian specialties… a crispy chicken biscuit sandwich.  Mmm Mmm Mmm… The hand battered chicken breast was seasoned and cooked to juicy perfection. The biscuits were tender, buttery, flaky, and ever so moist, yet had just enough structural integrity to hold the makings of a sandwich inside. You can taste the perfect balance of salt and butter with a subtle sweetness in each bite. The bottom had a golden brown crust which gave it a nice contrast to the soft and delicate inside. This heavenly sandwich is an off-off-menu item that Nick plans to make available to the public by partnering with other LA eateries in the future, so start asking for it now!

Next, I tried a biscuit with his very own homemade honey butter, the most popular way to order a biscuit at Lo/Cal. Wow!!! There is seriously nothing better in this world than bread and butter, and this takes it to new levels of decadence. Sweet, salty, cinnamony, pure amazingness.

We went a little in depth about why Nick’s biscuits taste so good, the secret method of which I can’t reveal, but I will mention one thing….PRACTICE! This recipe — which is inspired by early memories of the biscuits his grandfather made in Georgia — was literally years in the making!!! The urge to make biscuits originated as a way to have a piece of home away from home, but the desire to perfect the recipe came with an even stronger desire to share this unique taste of comfort with the world — as Nick likes to say, a great biscuit brings you home. So for many years he worked on his craft until he felt for sure that it was ready. By now, everything is down to a science, from the super light flour he imports from Kentucky, to the careful way he prepares the batter. Nick even refers to himself as a mad scientist!

Providence is hands down the most interesting of all culinary experiences I’ve ever experienced.  We did the full-blown 9 course meal, $300+ per person plus the wine pairing with each course.  Although the plates are teeny tiny, trust me, you will get full, especially with all that wine.  I loved experiencing all their different and unique offerings like baked salmon skin and uni egg.  I especially enjoyed the Greyhound Shot with was grapefruit and vodka in a jelly like sphere that made you feel like you were eating an egg yolk, except the taste was exceptional.  Its not just food, this is science people.  Not just science in their food, but in the way they provide service.  I sat their watching the servers walk around the room like clockwork.  Refilling glasses, fixing people’s napkins while they were away, checking in on tables.  It was fascinating to watch.

So why should you go here? Well, if you are a big time foodie and are ok with dropping some serious cash to enjoy an out of this world experience, then I’d say this is for you. Oh, and a little advance warning, be sure to arrive on time and expect to spend a good 3 hours!

The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, what an exquisite place to be.  I have had a few opportunities to dine here, as you can see from my many photos.  You have a few options when dining here. You can visit The Belvedere which serves a modern American cuisine.  On one visit to The Belvedere, I sat out on the terrace and I have to say it was probably one of my most memorable dining experiences. It was in the afternoon, birds were chirping, and the sounds from the water fountain next to me made the whole experience so peaceful and relaxing.  To top off my experience, I also spotted a former American Idol judge enjoying her lunch as well.

The second option is The Living Room, which is exactly as the name suggests.  You actually dine on the couches, and is mainly for drinking afternoon Tea, while listening to an actual harpist in the background. The fanciness is to die for!  On one of my visits, I just sat there soaking in the ambiance and listening to the beautiful sounds of the harp which happens to be one of my favorite instruments.  There was literally a group of elderly women enjoying their afternoon tea, all of them wearing their fancy Sunday hats, a sight you only see in the movies.

The third option is The Roof Garden, which is a patio next to the pool area. It is also located next to the spa, and is geared towards healthier food and imaginative drink options.  I have not had a chance to visit The Roof Garden, but I have ordered room service from there.

If you ever want to get away from the norm and treat yourself, I definitely recommend you pay a visit to this absolutely legendary hotel!

My recommendations to order: The Truffle Macaroni and Cheese, Roasted Harvey’s Guss Colorado Lamb, Tiramisu, and ESPECIALLY the Creme Broulee, paired with the smokey and unique tasting Russian Caravan tea all from The Belvedere.

Chablis Food and Wine Restaurant in Tarzana is a way to get a nice fancy dinner without having to drive all the way to the crowded streets of LA. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but was pleasantly surprised to see that the place was busy on a Friday night.  Mostly an older crowd.  They’re known for being experts at pairing wine with your entree.  I had the ahi tuna stacks with wonton crisps, mango relish and avocado puree.  I was definitely pleased with this.  I would not recommend getting the crab cake, I just wasn’t a fan of the taste.  Other than that, everyone’s dish looked superb.

For a really healthy place to eat, and delicious too, try Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop out in Beverly Hills.  They offer freshly made salads-to-order, sandwiches, and wraps using organic and gourmet ingredients everyday in an open-display kitchen.  My friend ordered the Grilled Vegetable salad. But since I’m not a rabbit, I’m not usually satisfied with just a salad for lunch, so I ordered the Turkey Melt on Pretzel Bread…..SO SO GOOD!  You could tell it is healthier than most other sandwiches, but still delicious at the same time. Romeo had the BBQ chicken panini, but he was already practically done with it by the time I remembered to take a picture of it! Although I like trying new restaurants, and especially new meals if I ever go to the same restaurant, but this is one sandwich that I would actually come back here for to have again.

Indian treats on an Indian beach

One of my favorite parts of my trip to India was my visit to the beach.  It was like going to a carnival.  There’s tons of people scattered around, and so many food stands with typical carnival food like snow cones, cotton candy, and corn on the cob.  I only wish I had more pictures!

Miami in a Night

The plan: Get to Miami. Rent a car. Party. Get back to the airport by 6 am. And yes, we did it.  We arrived at Miami, quickly rented out a car which was troublesome at first because a lot of the companies were sold out.  Got ready at the airport since we had to pick up our bags anyway.  Then had a fantastic dinner on the main strip.  Did the whole bar hopping at Nikki Beach. Then actually walked down to beach where some of us were actually daring enough to go in the water that late at night (not me).  Then back to the airport it was to catch our plane to Dominican Republic. No need to get a hotel either. Did the whole thing all over again on the way back. Now THAT’S how you do a layover lol.

The Misfit Bar…cool little place on 3rd Street Promenade.  For brunch they’ve got an Endless Mimosa option for $12 on weekends.  It was actually pretty delicious because the orange juice was a little pulpy and fresh squeezed. Everything you see here were was quite delicious and filling too.  Everyone was happy with their order.  My favorite would have to be the shredded kale and quinoa salad. Mmm mmm! Great place to spend a Saturday afternoon
